SUBIS SQUARE
SUBIS SQUARE
Subis square is a project located in the residential commercial district of Knoxville North, Tennessee. The design is centered at the rear to existing buildings, adjacent to the Old Gray Cemetery, on land that is zoned as quasi public land by the city zoning code. After observing the existing bird species found in the adjacent cemetery, which are comprised primarily of Sturnus vulgaris, European Starling, the project seeks to create a design which brings attention to the dwindling population of Pronge subis, or the purple martin and make opportunities for cultural events around the purple martin as a charismatic species.
Given the purple martins friendly nature, habitat needs that are dependent upon humans, and the direct competition brough by invasive avian species such as the Starling, the project seeks to not only create a safe and monitored habitat for the purple martin, but also seeks to make human-species relations in a post capital landscapes.
