Canal Street Station

Canal Street Station

Inspired by the Louisiana Iris, the building blooms with two pedals acting as balconies connected to the second-floor bar and entertainment venue, with the other two lower pedals acting as public theater-type seating.

The lower floor, covered by these elements, acts as the streetcar station, vendor access, and glass elevators that take spectators to the upper floor entertainment venue. This venue was left lightly programmed for large programmatic use and is covered by the upper petal structure for its roof.

The Canal Street Station was designed to act as an active street car station and Mardi Gras viewing location on Canal Street in New Orleans. Its prime location along most routes for many of the different cultural parades was a key factor in its inception. The notion of a hub for not just transportation but one of cultural, public, and utility was of great interest.
